Controversy and Response
Despite its box office success, Empuraan has been at the center of controversy due to certain references to the 2002 Gujarat riots. Following backlash from political leaders, the film’s production team announced the removal of scenes depicting violence against women and riots, along with changes to the antagonist’s name.
On Sunday, Mohanlal addressed the controversy via Facebook, expressing regret over the situation. He reassured audiences that neither he nor the film’s team intended to offend any political or religious group, stating, “We sincerely regret any distress caused.” His statement was later shared by director Prithviraj Sukumaran and producer Antony Perumbavoor.
Star-Studded Cast and Milestones
L2: Empuraan, the sequel to Prithviraj’s 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, boasts an ensemble cast including Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Sharma, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sukant Goel, and Nikhat Khan. Written by Murali Gopy and produced by Aashirvad Cinemas, the film marks Prithviraj’s third directorial collaboration with Mohanlal after Lucifer and Bro Daddy.
Notably, Empuraan has made history as the first-ever Malayalam film to be released in IMAX, further solidifying its place as one of the most ambitious projects in Malayalam cinema.
