Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan has recently garnered attention on social media for his admiration of Mumbai’s newly-inaugurated Coastal Road Tunnel. The tunnel, a key component of the Coastal Road project connecting Marine Drive and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, has been hailed by Bachchan as “a marvel” for its significant reduction in travel time.
The Coastal Road, spanning 10.8 kilometers with a two-kilometer-long tunnel between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive, has been a monumental infrastructure undertaking. Its first phase, inaugurated on March 11 by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde alongside Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, marks a milestone in Mumbai’s transportation network. The project, which commenced on October 13, 2018, carries a projected cost of ₹12,721 crore.
In a social media post marked as T 4968, Bachchan expressed his awe at traversing the tunnel for the first time, noting its strategic location and efficiency in reducing travel time between Haji Ali and Marine Drive.
The video shared by Bachchan quickly gained traction, accumulating over 50,000 views within minutes. Users flooded the post with comments, praising Mumbai’s modern infrastructure and acknowledging the efforts of the Maharashtra government and Minister Nitin Gadkari in realizing such projects.
The Coastal Road has significantly improved commute times, with the journey from Worli to Marine Drive now taking less than 10 minutes during peak hours, compared to the previous 40-50 minute duration. Additionally, authorities have implemented speed limits to ensure safe travel, with speed restrictions varying along different sections of the road and within the tunnel.
