Tabu, celebrated for her roles in Bollywood classics, reminisced about her experience working with director Priyadarshan on the set of the action drama Virasat. In a recent interview with Zoom, the actress shared a humorous incident involving Priyadarshan’s unconventional approach to achieving a rustic look for her character.
Known for her versatile performances, Tabu portrayed Gehna Thakur in Virasat, a role that garnered her widespread acclaim. Reflecting on the director’s distinct vision, Tabu revealed that Priyadarshan insisted on her having oily hair to enhance the village aesthetic. Initially advised by the hairstylist to use a small amount of gel for shine, Tabu followed this suggestion. However, Priyadarshan had a more drastic idea in mind.
Recalling the incident with a chuckle, Tabu stated, “Priyan (Priyadarshan) wanted me to have oily hair, so the hairstylist suggested a bit of gel. But when I arrived on set, he brought out a whole bottle of coconut oil and poured it over my head, saying, ‘This is how you have oil in your hair.'” This impromptu styling choice, though unexpected, made Tabu’s preparation process effortless. “I didn’t have to do any hairstyling. Long hair, apply oil, braid it, and go to the set – that was it,” she added.
Virasat, a remake of the Tamil film Thevar Magan, featured Tabu alongside Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Pooja Batra, and Milind Gunaji. The film marked a significant chapter in Tabu’s career, showcasing her ability to adapt to diverse roles under Priyadarshan’s direction.
Beyond Virasat, Tabu collaborated with Priyadarshan on several other notable projects, including Kaalapani (1996), Hera Pheri (2000), and Snegithiye (2000), further solidifying their successful cinematic partnership.
Looking ahead, Tabu is gearing up for her next venture, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, a musical thriller directed by Neeraj Pandey and featuring Ajay Devgn in the lead role. The film, scheduled for release on July 5, also stars Jimmy Shergill and Sayaji Shinde, promising audiences another engaging performance from the seasoned actress.
