L2 Empuraan OTT Premiere: Streaming Details for Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Action Thriller

Mohanlal’s 'L2: Empuraan' to Premiere on JioHotstar on April 24, Makers Remove Controversial Scenes

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer, titled L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is all set to make its digital debut. The film, which hit theatres on March 27, will be streaming globally on JioHotstar from April 24, the streaming platform confirmed on X (formerly Twitter).

JioHotstar posted, “L2: Empuraan will be streaming from 24 April only on JioHotstar,” while Mohanlal also shared the announcement with fans online.

Produced jointly by Lyca Productions, Aashirvad Cinemas, and Sree Gokulam Movies, L2: Empuraan features a powerful cast including Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Saniya Iyappan, Arjun Das, Saikumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Baiju Santhosh. Mohanlal reprises his role as the enigmatic Khureshi-Ab’raam, aka Stephen Nedumpally, with Prithviraj Sukumaran returning as Zayed Masood in an extended role.

Controversy and Cuts

Despite its commercial success, the film sparked controversy soon after its theatrical release, particularly for a sequence reportedly depicting the alleged 2002 Gujarat riots. Facing backlash, the filmmakers chose to edit out 17 portions from the film. Mohanlal issued a public statement acknowledging that the content had hurt sentiments and assured fans that the team was sensitive to such concerns.

About the Film

Written by Murali Gopy, L2: Empuraan continues the political-thriller saga that began with Lucifer. The sequel was filmed across diverse locations including Faridabad, Shimla, Leh, the UK, US, Gujarat, Chennai, Kerala, and the UAE, marking it as one of the most expansive and expensive productions in Malayalam cinema history. The film was released in five languages and crossed ₹105 crore nett in India within a month of its release, according to Sacnilk.com.

Fans who missed the theatrical run can now stream the much-talked-about political action thriller starting April 24, only on JioHotstar.
