Kamal Haasan Explains His Decision to Marry Twice Despite Brahmin Heritage: “I Follow Dasharatha’s Path”

Kamal Haasan on Marrying Twice Despite Brahmin Roots: “I Follow Lord Rama’s Father Dasharatha’s Path”

Veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan, known for his candid opinions and progressive views, made headlines again during a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life. Speaking openly about his personal life and past marriages, Haasan responded with wit and clarity when asked about his choices despite coming from a traditional Brahmin family.

The conversation began when actress Trisha, who stars alongside Kamal Haasan in Thug Life, was asked about her marital status. Trisha nonchalantly replied, “It’s okay if it happens, and okay if it doesn’t, too,” prompting Haasan to reflect on his own experiences with marriage.

Haasan, who has been married twice—first to Vani Ganapathy and later to actress Sarika, with whom he has two daughters—shared an anecdote from an old interview with his friend and current Member of Parliament, John Brittas. “Brittas once asked me why I got married twice despite coming from a good Brahmin family. I told him—what does a family’s reputation have to do with marriage?”

Brittas had further questioned him about not following Lord Rama’s example, who had only one wife. Kamal Haasan, known for his atheistic beliefs, replied sharply, “Firstly, I don’t pray to any god. I don’t follow Rama’s path. Probably I follow his father’s (Dasharatha) path—who had three wives.”

The reference was to King Dasharatha from Hindu mythology, father of Lord Rama, who had three wives: Kaushalya, Sumithra, and Kaikeyi. Haasan’s remark has sparked discussion online, drawing both appreciation for his honesty and criticism from more conservative corners.

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, directed by legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam, is slated to hit theatres on June 5. The film marks another milestone collaboration between the two icons of Indian cinema.
