Jaat Controversy: Filmmakers Apologize and Remove Church Scene After Backlash from Christian Groups

Jaat Row: Makers Delete Controversial Church Scene, Apologise After Backlash from Christian Community

The makers of Sunny Deol’s latest film “Jaat” have issued an official clarification and apology following widespread outrage from Christian organisations over a scene deemed “religiously insensitive.” The controversy erupted over a church sequence featuring Randeep Hooda’s character, which was accused of misusing Christian symbolism and promoting offensive content.

In a statement released on Friday, the production team acknowledged the backlash and announced the immediate removal of the contentious scene from the film. “Our intention was not to hurt any religious sentiments. We deeply regret it and have taken quick action to delete the scene from the film. We sincerely apologise to everyone whose beliefs have been hurt,” the statement read.

The filmmakers’ response came after a police complaint was filed at Jalandhar’s Sadar Police Station under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint named actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, and director Gopichand Malineni.

The dispute centers around a church scene in which Randeep Hooda’s antagonist character, Ranatunga, is shown standing beneath a crucifix in a pose resembling the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. His godlike demeanor in the scene, along with villagers depicted as fearful and reverent, drew severe criticism. Matters were further inflamed by a violent sequence where the character claims he is sent by Jesus Christ before opening fire during a church prayer session.

Viewers expressed shock at blood-smeared religious artefacts, shattered glass, and what they described as the desecration of sacred space. Several Christian leaders also condemned the film for its release timing—just days after Good Friday— which they claimed was insensitive and provocative.

Community members and religious organisations rallied both online and offline, demanding accountability and the removal of the scene. They also raised concerns over a dialogue in the trailer, which they argued could incite anti-Christian sentiment.

“Jaat,” featuring Sunny Deol in the lead, released in theatres on April 10, 2025. Despite the film’s action-heavy narrative, the controversy has overshadowed its box-office performance and prompted discussions on the portrayal of religious themes in mainstream cinema.
