Veteran actress Zeenat Aman took a nostalgic trip down memory lane as she recalled working with Amitabh Bachchan in their 1983 film Pukar. Sharing a clip of the popular song Samundar Mein Nahake on Instagram, Zeenat revealed interesting behind-the-scenes details from the shoot, which took place on the serene beaches of Goa.
Zeenat Aman on Shooting ‘Samundar Mein Nahake’
In her post, Zeenat Aman reminisced about the song, where she appeared in a “titillating white outfit” while rolling in the surf, despite not knowing how to swim. She humorously mentioned how Amitabh Bachchan, full of energy, “pranced around like an ardent bird of paradise.”
“Now Goa in the early 80s was quiet, idyllic, and unpeopled. So Samundar Mein Nahake was shot on an empty beach, and it was an easy-breezy affair. For me, at least! I didn’t have any lip-syncing to do, nor much choreography to learn. The brief was as basic as they come—look pretty!” Zeenat wrote.
She further revealed her struggle with filming in the sea, admitting that while the scene required her to appear comfortable in the water, she had to swallow a fair amount of nerves (and seawater) due to her inability to swim. Despite the challenges, she felt she convincingly played the role of a jal pari (mermaid).
Amitabh Bachchan’s First Shoot After His Coolie Accident
One of the most remarkable aspects of the shoot was that it was Amitabh Bachchan’s first film after his life-threatening accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982. Zeenat recalled how the entire nation had been deeply concerned for Bachchan’s health, making his return to the set an emotional and joyous moment.
“Bachchan mania was well-established in the country by then, and the nation practically held its breath till he was in the clear. So as you can imagine, the atmosphere on set was particularly buoyant during the making of this film,” she shared.
About Pukar (1983)
Directed by Ramesh Behl, Pukar was an action-packed film with a strong anti-colonial narrative, focusing on freedom fighters struggling to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule. Alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman, the movie also starred Randhir Kapoor and Tina Munim in pivotal roles.
