US Plus-Size Rapper Sues Lyft After Driver Refuses Ride Over Her Weight

Plus-size influencer and rapper Dank Demoss, whose real name is Dajua Blanding, has taken legal action against Lyft after a driver allegedly refused her service due to her weight. The incident, which occurred last month when she was heading to a Detroit Lions watch party, has sparked widespread debate over weight discrimination.

Blanding shared her experience in a viral TikTok video, detailing how the driver dismissed her claim that she could fit into his sedan. According to the lawsuit, the driver initially stated, “Believe me, you can’t,” before changing his reasoning to concerns over his car’s tires handling her weight. He later suggested that she request an XL vehicle instead.

The influencer, who weighs approximately 489 pounds (221.8 kg), argued that she has previously taken rides in smaller vehicles without issue. In an interview with Fox News Detroit, she expressed her frustration and emotional distress, emphasizing that the driver’s refusal was both hurtful and unfair.

Attorneys Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan, representing Blanding, argue that weight is a protected characteristic under Michigan law, making the driver’s actions a form of discrimination. Marko compared weight-based discrimination to racial or religious discrimination, stating that Lyft drivers cannot deny service based on such characteristics unless there is a legitimate security threat.

In response to the lawsuit, Lyft issued a statement reiterating its commitment to non-discrimination. “Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination—we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness. Our community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination,” the company said.

The case has ignited discussions about the rights of plus-size individuals in public and private transportation services. Legal experts suggest that the lawsuit could set a precedent for future cases involving weight discrimination in ride-hailing services.
