Ranveer Allahbadia Files Undertaking in Supreme Court Vowing to Maintain ‘Decency’ on His Podcast

Ranveer Allahbadia Promises Decency in Podcast After Controversial Remarks, Files Undertaking in Supreme Court

Podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia has made a commitment to ensure decency in his popular podcast, “The Ranveer Show,” after triggering a massive controversy with his recent remarks on the “India’s Got Latent” show. Allahbadia’s comments, particularly his “parents’ sex” remark, sparked outrage, leading to calls for action against him from both BJP and opposition MPs. Following the controversy, multiple FIRs were filed against him, and he was summoned by the Mumbai cyber police.

In response to the ongoing legal proceedings, Allahbadia filed an undertaking in the Supreme Court on Monday. His senior advocate, Abhinav Chandrachud, submitted the undertaking, assuring that Allahbadia would maintain decency and morality in future episodes of his podcast. This move came after the Supreme Court’s directive in March, which allowed him to resume the podcast but with strict conditions on content relating to “morality and decency.”

The Supreme Court had initially restrained Allahbadia from airing any program of his podcast that could influence the ongoing investigations or touch upon the merits of the cases against him. The bench had also directed the central government to formulate a draft regulatory mechanism to oversee social media content. In February, the apex court had granted Allahbadia interim protection from arrest, but it criticized his comments, labeling them as vulgar and stating that he had a “dirty mind.”

While filing the undertaking, Chandrachud also sought a modification of a court condition regarding Allahbadia’s passport, stating that the restriction on his travel was impacting his livelihood. Allahbadia frequently travels abroad for interviews that require multiple meetings before recording, and his legal team argued that the passport restriction would affect his professional commitments. However, the court noted that allowing Allahbadia to travel could interfere with the investigation and questioned the Maharashtra and Assam governments on the timeline for the probe’s completion. The solicitor general confirmed that the investigation would be concluded within two weeks.

The court indicated that it would consider Allahbadia’s request for the release of his passport in two weeks, depending on the status of the investigation. For now, Allahbadia has committed to ensuring that “The Ranveer Show” adheres to standards of decency and morality, with the Supreme Court closely monitoring the proceedings.
