The blockbuster Rajinikanth-starrer Vettaiyan has reportedly earned close to ₹250 crore at the box office and is now speculated to release on Amazon Prime Video for its OTT debut. Directed by Jai Bhim filmmaker TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan has created a substantial buzz online, with fans eagerly awaiting a potential streaming date of November 7, shortly after Diwali.
While social media is abuzz with speculation, there has been no official confirmation from either the producers, Lyca Productions, or Amazon Prime Video. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala highlighted the possibility of a November 7 release, noting that Tamil films typically premiere on OTT four weeks after their theatrical run. “Since Vettaiyan didn’t release in Hindi, the eight-week OTT window usually seen in multiplexes doesn’t apply here. Given that the movie was released on October 10, a November 7 OTT release on Prime Video seems likely,” said Bala, although he added that any official announcement is expected just days before the potential release.
Blockbuster Production and Stellar Cast
Vettaiyan, produced by Lyca Productions on a significant budget of approximately ₹300 crore, stars an ensemble cast including Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Dushara Vijayan, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Ritika Singh, and Rana Daggubati. The film’s OTT rights were reportedly acquired by Amazon Prime Video for ₹90 crore, covering streaming across all languages.
Despite the impressive budget, the film’s theatrical collections have yet to reach anticipated levels, with the upcoming OTT release expected to boost its overall success.
Director’s Plans for a Prequel
In a recent interview with Telugu media, director TJ Gnanavel shared his interest in developing a prequel to Vettaiyan to delve deeper into the background of Rajinikanth’s character, Athiyan. “Encounters in the film raise questions about justice and the truth behind them. I hope to explore Athiyan’s journey further in a prequel, as it adds layers to his character and addresses these ethical dilemmas,” Gnanavel remarked.
