Nicole Kidman Tears Up During Emotional Speech at International Star Award, Pays Tribute to Late Mother

Nicole Kidman Delivers Emotional Tribute to Late Mother at International Star Award Ceremony

Nicole Kidman emotionally dedicated her International Star Award to her late mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, during her speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The event, held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Friday, saw Kidman break down in tears as she reflected on her grief and shared her journey of resilience since her mother’s passing last year.

The award was presented to Kidman for her remarkable performance in the erotic thriller Babygirl, which had garnered significant attention. As she accepted the accolade, Kidman explained that she had just returned from Australia, where she had spent time reflecting on her loss. “I’m in that place, like, oh, ah, OK, this is different now,” Kidman said, acknowledging the profound impact of losing both her parents.

The actress, visibly emotional, expressed that her career had always been driven by the love and support of her parents. “My whole career has been for my mom and my dad, and they’re not here anymore,” she shared. “I want to keep working and giving to the world. I’m sorry I’m crying.”

Kidman also paid a heartfelt tribute to Babygirl director Halina Reijn, whom she praised for her dedication to the project. She spoke about the immense passion Reijn had poured into the A24 sensual drama, noting that she had to miss the Venice Film Festival’s Best Actress award ceremony in September due to her mother’s death. Kidman explained that she received the devastating news of her mother’s passing just after arriving in Venice, and she asked Reijn to accept the award on her behalf.

Fellow Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis presented Kidman with the prestigious honor and reflected on their close friendship. Curtis praised Kidman’s ambition as an artist, calling it a reflection of “love.” Curtis also spoke about the deep bond Kidman shared with her late mother, Janelle, and the lasting impact she had on Kidman’s life and career.

In a touching moment, Curtis recalled their time together at Kidman’s “lovely and modest home,” where they spent an afternoon laughing and bonding over family, storytelling, and filmmaking while watching a football game.

As Kidman continues to navigate her career with the strength instilled by her parents, her heartfelt speech was a reminder of the powerful influence of family and the importance of perseverance in the face of loss.
