Masaba Gupta Reveals Inspiration Behind Her Cabaret Cameo in Kesari Chapter 2: Samantha Ruth Prabhu's 'Oo Antava'

Designer and actor Masaba Gupta’s surprise dance cameo in Kesari Chapter 2 has taken the internet by storm, drawing attention not just for her acting but for her unexpected cabaret number, Khumaari. In a recent interview, Masaba revealed that her sultry performance was inspired by none other than Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s iconic track Oo Antava from Pushpa: The Rise.

Kesari Chapter 2, a gripping courtroom drama set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, released on April 18 to critical acclaim for its powerful narrative and performances. While the film’s acting and storyline have garnered praise, it is Masaba’s unexpected cameo that has truly captured the audience’s imagination.

A Dance Surprise

Masaba, known for her work as a designer and businesswoman, shocked fans when she made a surprise appearance in the film with a cabaret-style number. Although the song Khumaari had not been officially released at the time, clips of the dance sequence quickly made their way onto social media, sparking excitement among fans and viewers.

In an interview with The Indian Express’ Screen, Masaba shared how Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Oo Antava was the driving force behind her decision to take on the role. The song, which became a chartbuster in 2021, had a profound impact on Masaba, who was inspired by its boldness and the confidence with which Samantha performed it.

“I was very impressed with Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Oo Antava and I’ve always wanted to do something like that. In fact, when I saw that song, I manifested this number in my head because I wanted to do what Samantha did, and I wanted the impact to be similar,” Masaba explained. She also emphasized that Oo Antava stood out not just as an item song but as a performance with a strong message that transcended its genre.

Breaking Out of Her Comfort Zone

Masaba admitted that initially, the idea of being offered a dance number seemed “bizarre,” but it was an opportunity she couldn’t turn down. She viewed it as a way to honor her long-standing connection to dance. “If an item song is done tastefully, there’s nothing wrong in being a part of it,” she said, adding that she approached Khumaari with a focus on artistry and impact, much like Samantha did with Oo Antava.

For Masaba, Khumaari holds even more personal significance as it marks her debut dance track, and the performance was filmed before she became pregnant. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I actually performed this and shot it pre-pregnancy and I’m postpartum now, so it’s quite a pleasure to see something that you shot two-and-a-half years ago come to life.”

Behind the Scenes of Kesari Chapter 2

Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 stars Akshay Kumar, Ananya Panday, and R Madhavan. The film has been praised for its hard-hitting portrayal of the events surrounding the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and its strong performances. Masaba’s cameo, however, added a surprising layer of glamour and spice to the film, which audiences have wholeheartedly embraced.

As the film continues to captivate viewers in theatres, Masaba’s unexpected cameo in Kesari Chapter 2 has become one of the movie’s most talked-about moments.
