Celebrating 25 years since the iconic release of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,’ Kajol, renowned for her portrayal of Anjali in the film, has opened up about a past clash with director Karan Johar regarding her desired role.
In a recent interview as part of Rajeev Masand’s Netflix Actors’ Roundtable, Kajol disclosed a hitherto unknown tussle behind the scenes of the beloved 1998 film. Contrary to her popularly adored role as Anjali, Kajol revealed her desire to embody the character of Tina, portrayed by Rani Mukerji in the movie. However, Karan Johar firmly declined her request, insisting she play Anjali instead.
Reflecting on this conflict, Kajol candidly shared, “I fought in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I fought with Karan Johar, I wanted to play Tina’s role, and he was like, ‘No. You are playing Anjali.’ I was like, ‘But I want to play Tina’s role. You don’t know what I will do with Tina.’ Karan told me to shut up. I fought with him tooth and nail for 45 minutes but he refused categorically.”
Despite her initial preference for the character of Tina, Kajol’s remarkable portrayal of Anjali earned her widespread acclaim, culminating in a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
This revelation surfaces amidst a recent episode of ‘Koffee with Karan’ featuring Kajol and Rani Mukerji as guests, where Johar discussed the dynamic between the two actors. Kajol clarified the perceived distance between them, stating, “It was an organic distance, and where work is concerned, I think it’s more that both of us liked where we were.”
Rani Mukerji also chimed in, shedding light on their relationship dynamics. “Because I have known her as a kid and she was Kajol didi for me and it was a bit strange. I guess when you grow apart, you really don’t know the reason why because you don’t meet that often,” she shared, elaborating on the nuances of their association.
