Hollywood actor Jason Momoa is making a major return to the DC universe, but this time with a new and exciting character. The actor, known for his iconic portrayal of Aquaman in the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has been cast as Lobo in the upcoming DC movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The film, which will star House of the Dragon actor Milly Alcock as the titular Supergirl, will center around Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. It’s set to introduce the rebellious and violent anti-hero, Lobo, a character that has been a fan favorite in the DC Universe for decades. Lobo, an alien bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, is infamous for his irreverent and chaotic personality, having wiped out his entire race just for fun. His first appearance was in Omega Men #3 in 1983, created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.
Jason Momoa’s casting as Lobo comes after years of expressing his interest in the role. In a recent Instagram post, the actor shared a screenshot of a past interview where he discussed his long-time admiration for the character. “Lobo was always my favorite. I always wanted to play him because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” Momoa wrote. “If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah.” The actor confirmed that he is officially stepping into the role, fulfilling a long-standing wish.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be part of the rebooted DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, with this movie being the second installment following Superman, which will star David Corenswet as the iconic superhero and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Momoa’s previous ventures into the DC Universe have been marked by his portrayal of Aquaman, first appearing as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by Justice League (2017), and ultimately headlining his own solo films, Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office, Momoa’s portrayal of the character has left a lasting impact on DC fans.
The new direction in the DC Universe promises fresh storytelling, and with Momoa’s enthusiasm for the role of Lobo, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be one of the most highly anticipated films in the DC slate. Fans can look forward to seeing a different side of Momoa, showcasing his versatility as an actor in the larger-than-life role of Lobo.
