"Indian-American Actress Faces Backlash Over Rumors of Playing Rapunzel in Disney's 'Tangled' Live-Action"

Indian-American actress Avantika Vandanapu, known for her role in “Mean Girls,” has become the target of racist backlash following online rumors that she may be cast as Rapunzel in a live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Tangled.”

The backlash primarily stems from TikTok users expressing disappointment with an actress of South Asian descent potentially playing the beloved princess. Videos on TikTok showcased individuals upset by the casting rumors, with one user even threatening to cancel Disney if Vandanapu were cast as Rapunzel due to her not being of German descent.

The negative comments extended to Vandanapu’s Instagram posts, where users criticized her suitability for the role and expressed concerns about her potentially “ruining” the character of Rapunzel.

This backlash mirrors similar incidents in Hollywood, such as when Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid,” leading to the #NotMyAriel hashtag trending on Twitter. While Bailey addressed the racist criticism, highlighting the importance of representation, Vandanapu has not responded to the trolling yet.

Despite the criticism, South Asian fans have come to Vandanapu’s defense, emphasizing that there has been no official confirmation of her playing Rapunzel and that a live-action “Tangled” adaptation is not currently in production. Supporters have also pointed out the double standards in casting decisions and urged people to refrain from sending hate based on unconfirmed rumors.
