Several Hollywood celebrities made a striking statement on the red carpet of the 96th Academy Awards by donning small red pins, sparking curiosity among fans about their significance. These pins, adorned with the silhouette of a hand bearing a black heart in the palm, symbolize a call for a ceasefire amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Prominent figures including Billie Eilish, Finneas, Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, and Ramy Youssef were among those seen sporting these symbolic pins at the prestigious event. Ramy Youssef, known for his role in “Poor Things,” elucidated the meaning behind the pins to a Variety reporter, shedding light on the creatives-led initiative aimed at advocating for peace in Gaza.
In an interview with Variety, Youssef emphasized the urgent need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the conflict. He articulated a collective desire for justice and lasting peace for the Palestinian people, urging an end to the violence that has ravaged the region.
The red pins were provided by Artists4Ceasefire, a coalition of celebrities and members of the entertainment industry who have joined forces to champion the cause of peace. These artists, along with others who signed an open letter, including Jessica Chastain, Quinta Brunson, Richard Gere, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, and Mahershala Ali, called upon President Biden and world leaders to take immediate action to halt the violence and facilitate a ceasefire.
The letter, as reported by the New York Times, underscored the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, highlighting the devastating impact on civilian lives, particularly children and refugees. It urged leaders to prioritize humanitarian aid delivery and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the conflict.
Artists4Ceasefire described the pins as a symbol of collective support for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as well as the release of hostages and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. The gesture signifies a unified stance within the entertainment industry in solidarity with the people of Gaza and their quest for peace and stability.
Amidst the display of solidarity at the Oscars, actors Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud of “Anatomy of a Fall” were noted wearing pins featuring the Palestinian flag, further highlighting the diverse expressions of support for Palestine.
