Social media content creator and actor Apoorva Mukhija recently spoke about the aftermath of the India’s Got Latent controversy, revealing how she faced a media trial, received death threats, and lost business opportunities due to the backlash. In a candid interview with Yuvaa, Apoorva shared the emotional toll the controversy took on her and credited her strong support system, including actress Rhea Chakraborty, for helping her through this difficult time.
The controversy began in February when Apoorva, along with fellow creators Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, and Samay Raina, appeared on the panel of India’s Got Latent. Ranveer’s controversial remarks about parents and sex sparked significant backlash, leading to multiple FIRs being filed against him and the other panelists. The entire incident snowballed into a media frenzy, and Apoorva found herself in the eye of the storm.
Apoorva, known for her candid personality, initially wanted to speak out and address the situation. However, the overwhelming advice from those around her was to stay silent to avoid further media speculation. She said, “My initial response was, ‘I want to talk about it,’ because Apoorva talks about everything. But everyone around me said, ‘You cannot open your mouth, it’ll start another media cycle for five more days. They’ll take just one line from what you said, run it on the news, and use it against you. You can’t do it.’ The only option I had was to stay silent.”
Apoorva further revealed the emotional and financial toll the controversy took on her career. “I lost a lot of business. I remember when this year started, everyone in my work group said, ‘This is your year,’ and it all vanished in one day. All the brands wrote to me saying it’s not the right time to be associated with me. It was so bad,” she admitted.
During this trying time, Apoorva reached out to actress Rhea Chakraborty, who had faced her own media trial following the death of her then-boyfriend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, in 2020. Rhea had been accused of abetment of suicide, and her personal life was subjected to intense public scrutiny. In the interview, Apoorva shared that she spoke to Rhea for over an hour on a video call, seeking comfort and advice. “Shoutout to Rhea Chakraborty. I even spoke to her on a video call for an hour. She was one of the few people who understood what I was going through,” Apoorva said, adding, “I longed to hear that everything will be fine.”
Rhea Chakraborty, who had endured her own media trial, recalled her harrowing experience during an appearance on Deeptalk with Chetan Bhagat. Rhea reflected on the overwhelming pressure and the moment she thought, “Let me go to jail. So many people were after me that existence was not okay for me.”
In March 2025, Rhea was cleared of all charges in the Sushant Singh Rajput case by the CBI, bringing some closure to her ordeal.
The India’s Got Latent Controversy
The India’s Got Latent controversy erupted when Ranveer Allahbadia’s comments on the show sparked outrage, leading to FIRs filed against him, Apoorva, Ashish, and Samay. Ranveer was temporarily restricted from uploading videos on his YouTube channel, but in March, the Supreme Court lifted the ban, allowing him to resume his podcast, The Ranveer Show.
Meanwhile, Apoorva Mukhija, who had been working on the film Nadaaniyan featuring Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, refrained from promoting the movie on social media or in public due to the ongoing controversy. The film, backed by Karan Johar, was released on Netflix amid the media storm surrounding Apoorva.
