The re-release of Vijay and Trisha’s 2004 blockbuster “Ghilli” has set the box office on fire once again, with projections suggesting a staggering ₹10 crore worldwide gross on its opening day.
The decision to re-release “Ghilli” comes amid a dearth of major film releases in Tamil cinema this April, owing to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Directed by Dharani, “Ghilli” made a grand return to theaters on April 20, much to the delight of fans who have been eagerly awaiting its revival after two decades.
As per reports, “Ghilli” had already amassed around ₹3 crore through pre-sales globally for its opening day, as indicated by Cinetrak. Given Vijay’s track record of surpassing his own box office milestones, the re-release of this film has sparked immense excitement among his fanbase, evident in their enthusiastic social media posts and viral dance videos from the theaters featuring hit songs like “Arjunar Villu” and “Appadi Podu.”
Ram Muthuram Cinemas expressed their admiration, stating, “Genuinely #Ghilli can’t be replaced in #Thalapathy @actorvijay’s career! Records BreaKING! #GhilliInRamcinemas,” while Aascar Cinemas reported back-to-back housefull shows on April 20.
Lead actress Trisha also shared her joy at the film’s resurgence, thanking fans for their overwhelming response on Instagram. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you Thank you Thank you. Such amazing posts and videos you guys are sending me. Making my day and how. (heart emoji) #ghillirelrease.”
“Ghilli,” which originally hit screens on April 17, 2004, has completed two decades of its release this April. It remains one of the most significant blockbusters in the careers of Vijay and Trisha, having grossed over ₹50 crore globally in 2004. Notably, “Ghilli” is a remake of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu’s hit film “Okkadu.”
Amidst speculations about Vijay’s potential entry into politics and his gradual shift away from Tamil cinema, his fans are closely following his every move. His recent appearance at the polling booth during the Tamil Nadu elections saw a massive turnout of admirers, highlighting his immense popularity.
With the resounding success of “Ghilli’s” re-release, attention now turns to Vijay’s forthcoming projects, including the highly anticipated collaboration with director Venkat Prabhu, dubbed as the “Greatest of all time” by his ardent fans.
