Veteran Malayalam actor T P Madhavan passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88. He had been undergoing treatment for various age-related ailments at a private hospital, according to sources from the film industry. Madhavan had been living at Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram for the past eight years.
Madhavan began his acting career later in life, making his debut in 1975 at the age of 40 when actor Madhu gave him his first break. Over the course of his career, he appeared in over 600 Malayalam films, making a name for himself by portraying a wide range of characters. Initially known for his antagonistic roles, Madhavan later transitioned into comedic and character roles. His work was well-received, earning him a reputation as a versatile actor.
Despite facing personal challenges, including a period when he lived in a lodge in Thiruvananthapuram, Madhavan continued to act. A television serial director eventually took him to Gandhi Bhavan, where he lived during his later years, still making occasional appearances in films and serials.
In addition to his film career, Madhavan was deeply involved in the Malayalam film industry, serving as the first general secretary of the Malayalam film actors’ association, AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists).
Tributes and Notable Work
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences, describing Madhavan as a talented actor who portrayed a variety of characters across hundreds of films. The chief minister acknowledged that even in his final years, Madhavan continued to contribute to television serials despite his residence at Gandhi Bhavan.
Madhavan’s notable films include Nadodikkattu, Pandippada, Ordinary, Ayal Kadha Ezhuthukayan, Nammal, Narasimham, Oru CBI Diary Kuruppu, Moonam Mura, Achuvettante Veedu, Sandesham, and Aaram Thampuran. His contributions to Malayalam cinema left a lasting impact on the industry and audiences alike.
T P Madhavan’s passing marks the end of an era for Malayalam cinema, but his legacy will continue to live on through the iconic characters he portrayed.
