Veteran playback singer Udit Narayan has been facing backlash online after a recent video surfaced showing him kissing a woman on the lips during a show. This led to a wave of criticism from viewers who found the gesture inappropriate. In the aftermath, social media users unearthed old videos of the singer kissing fellow playback singers Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal during past events, reigniting the conversation.
The most recent video that sparked controversy shows Udit Narayan kissing a woman on the lips during a performance. His actions quickly caught the attention of internet users, many of whom were disturbed by the seemingly unsolicited gesture.
Old videos soon resurfaced showing Udit’s previous interactions with Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal. In one clip, Udit kissed Alka on the cheek while she was performing on Indian Idol. Alka appeared visibly uncomfortable and quickly stepped away from him. In another video from a different event, Alka’s reaction to the kiss seemed less than enthusiastic, as she made a face after Udit kissed her cheek. A similar incident occurred a few years ago when Udit kissed Shreya Ghoshal on the cheek after she won an award. Although Shreya smiled afterward, she initially looked uncomfortable.
The internet was quick to react, with many pointing out how uncomfortable the singers seemed in these interactions. A user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “She (Shreya) clearly felt uncomfortable and laughed it off.” Others called Udit’s behavior “unacceptable,” noting how he continued to hold Shreya’s arm and speak to her despite her discomfort. One user remarked, “Such actions are disrespectful and should never be tolerated.”
There were also critical comments about Udit’s behavior towards Alka Yagnik. A person posted, “Alka looks displeased. Stop this harassment Udit. Sick!”
Udit Narayan, who has collaborated with both Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal on numerous hit songs over the years, including Jaane Kyon Log Pyar, Haseeno Ko Aate Hain, and Bairi Piya, has since responded to the backlash. In an interview with HT City, he defended his actions, stating, “Fans are so crazy. We’re not like that, we are decent people.” He explained that such interactions often happen due to the enthusiasm of fans, adding, “Some people encourage this and show their love through this… This is all madness. One shouldn’t give so much attention to it.”
Despite Udit’s explanation, the incident has reignited discussions on personal boundaries and respect in the entertainment industry, particularly when interacting with fans and colleagues.
