Suriya’s Retro: A Gangster Drama of Love, Action, and Redemption Unveiled with Teaser

Suriya 44 Titled Retro: A Gangster Saga of Action, Romance, and Redemption

Suriya’s 44th film has been officially titled Retro, marking his first collaboration with filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. The makers unveiled the title and a teaser on Christmas, offering fans a glimpse into the gripping world of this gangster drama.

A Glimpse into the World of Retro

The teaser, spanning two minutes and five seconds, introduces audiences to a dual narrative. It begins with Suriya and Pooja Hegde sharing a tender moment on the banks of the Varanasi ghats during the evening aarti. Dressed in a light pink sari, Pooja ties a band around Suriya’s wrist as he makes a heartfelt promise:
“(I) will control my temper. Will quit working with my father. Violence, rowdyism, and hooliganism… will quit everything from this moment. Will try to smile and be happy. The purpose of my birth, in your language, my Dhammam, is love. Pure love. That’s it. Now, tell me, should we get married?”

As the couple shares a tender moment, flashes of Suriya’s violent criminal life intrude — scenes of him punching walls in frustration, taking down enemies, and engaging in illegal activities. The teaser also introduces menacing characters portrayed by Joju George, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, and Nasser.

What to Expect from Retro

The tagline for RetroLove, Laughter, and War — hints at a story balancing intense action with emotional depth. The film explores the life of a gangster who struggles to leave his past behind for the woman he loves.

Produced by Suriya and Jyothika’s 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Films, Retro boasts a strong technical team. The film’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna and editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali. Retro is set to release in May 2025.

Suriya’s Upcoming Projects

Before Retro, Suriya was seen in the action fantasy epic Kanguva. Following Retro, Suriya is set to collaborate with RJ Balaji on a new project that will reunite him with actress Trisha Krishnan after almost two decades. Their last appearance together was in the 2005 film Aaru.

Suriya and Trisha also starred in earlier hits such as Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002) and Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), directed by Mani Ratnam.

With Retro, Suriya is poised to deliver a film that blends action, romance, and redemption, promising audiences a cinematic experience to remember.
