Sudhir Mishra Questions ‘Adolescence’ Topping Netflix India: ‘Breaks Every Rule of Script Writing’

Sudhir Mishra Questions Netflix India's No. 1 Show ‘Adolescence’: ‘Violates Every Rule of Bad Script Writing’

Renowned filmmaker Sudhir Mishra has expressed surprise over the success of the Netflix series Adolescence in India. The show, which has taken the streaming platform by storm, currently holds the No. 1 spot on Netflix India, defying conventional storytelling norms. Mishra, known for his critically acclaimed films like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Serious Men, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the show’s unexpected rise in popularity.

Sudhir Mishra on ‘Adolescence’ Ranking No. 1 in India

Mishra admitted that he watched Adolescence after being influenced by Hansal Mehta and Shekhar Kapur, who praised the show. However, he questioned how a slow-paced drama, which he claims “violates every rule of bad script writing,” could top Netflix charts in India.

A user responded to his post, arguing that the show had already received global acclaim and positive reviews from Western critics, which influenced Indian audiences’ perception. Mishra replied that he was drawn to the show solely because of Mehta and Kapur’s recommendations, adding that while he enjoyed Adolescence, he personally preferred Better Call Saul.

About Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’

Adolescence is a four-part limited series starring Stephen Graham and newcomer Owen Cooper. Directed by Philip Barantini, the series was released on March 13 and has since gone viral on social media.

Co-created and written by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, Adolescence follows the tragic story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a schoolmate. The show delves into themes of casual misogyny and the impact of social media on today’s youth. Its unique approach—each scene filmed in a single take—has been widely applauded.

The show’s impact has reached beyond entertainment, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer backing Netflix’s initiative to stream it for free in UK secondary schools, ensuring as many teenagers as possible watch the gripping drama.

Despite some skepticism, Adolescence continues to dominate Netflix charts, proving that unconventional storytelling can still capture audiences worldwide.
