Designer highlights SRK’s global stardom to Met Gala hosts Teyana Taylor and Ego Nwodim, calls him a “magician, superstar, and icon”
It was a historic moment as Shah Rukh Khan, one of the world’s most beloved cinematic icons, made his Met Gala debut this year. While fans in the thousands chanted his name outside his New York hotel, not everyone inside the fashion world’s biggest night seemed to recognize the magnitude of his stardom — until fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherji stepped in to set the record straight.
In a Vogue interview clip that quickly went viral, Met Gala hosts Teyana Taylor and Ego Nwodim introduced Shah Rukh Khan as the “first male Bollywood star” to attend the gala, asking him about the experience of making history. The superstar, known for his humility and charm, replied that he was nervous, being a “shy person” who doesn’t attend many red carpet events.
The conversation, though well-meaning, seemed to miss the mark — until Sabyasachi gracefully took over to provide some much-needed context. “Just to give a little context, Shah Rukh Khan is probably the most famous man in the world and his fan following is legendary. We nearly had a stampede outside the hotel when he came out,” he said.
Sabya went on to explain the significance of SRK’s look: “When you get a man like this, when it’s Black Dandy, representation is the most important thing. We wanted to represent Shah Rukh Khan as Shah Rukh Khan and nobody else.”
The hosts, visibly impressed, responded with admiration. “Well Sabya I think you did your thing and Shah Rukh, you look fantastic. I hope your kids are proud, kids, you gotta be proud of dad,” said Ego.
Fans online were quick to applaud Sabyasachi for stepping in to highlight SRK’s global stature. “I love how Sabya made them realise how big of a deal SRK is. He’s one of the biggest and greatest superstars in Bollywood,” a YouTube commenter wrote. Another fan added, “SRK just made MET more popular and the interviewers live in a bubble. Once they realise who SRK is, they’ll know what a big deal it was to interview him.”
The Look That Made Heads Turn
For the star’s much-anticipated appearance, Sabyasachi designed a regal black ensemble titled Black Dandy. The floor-length coat was made from Tasmanian superfine wool with Japanese horn buttons, paired with a crepe de chine silk shirt and tailored trousers. A pleated satin kamarbandh added a touch of traditional elegance, while the look was elevated with a custom Bengal Tiger Head Cane — crafted in 18k gold and encrusted with tourmalines, sapphires, and diamonds.
Sabyasachi described SRK as “a magician, superstar, and icon. Period,” adding that the look was his interpretation of the Black Dandy — showcasing superstardom with a maximalist flourish on a global stage.
Shah Rukh’s Humility Shines
Despite his legendary status, Shah Rukh remained humble throughout the interaction, focusing more on wanting to impress his children than making headlines. “I just hope my kids are proud,” he said with a smile.
With this Met Gala appearance, Shah Rukh Khan not only made a bold fashion statement but also introduced a new global audience to the magic of Bollywood’s King Khan. Thanks to Sabyasachi’s eloquent and powerful tribute, the world now knows what millions have known for decades — Shah Rukh Khan isn’t just a star; he’s a phenomenon.
