Mumbai, 2026
In accordance with the assurance given during the 2026 Budget Session of the Maharashtra Legislature regarding the provision of adequate toilet facilities for women athletes at sports grounds across the state, a comprehensive review meeting was held today with senior officials from the concerned departments. The meeting focused on assessing the current status of sports infrastructure and discussing the measures required to create a more inclusive, safe, and athlete-friendly environment for women participating in sports at all levels.
Women athletes from Maharashtra have consistently brought pride to the state and the nation through their outstanding performances in a wide range of sporting disciplines. From national championships to international competitions, these athletes have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication, and determination. Recognizing their achievements and the need to further encourage female participation in sports, the meeting emphasized the importance of providing world-class facilities and ensuring that sports grounds are equipped to meet the specific needs of women athletes.
To create a safer, more dignified, and encouraging atmosphere, officials were directed to formulate a comprehensive state-level policy aimed at upgrading sports infrastructure across Maharashtra. The proposed policy will not only focus on the construction of model sanitation facilities but will also include the installation of adequate lighting systems, separate changing rooms for women athletes, drinking water facilities, and CCTV surveillance systems to enhance safety and security at sports venues.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that women athletes receive the support and facilities necessary to excel in their respective fields. It was highlighted that the development of sports infrastructure goes beyond the construction of playgrounds and stadiums. The success of athletes depends on a combination of factors, including access to quality training facilities, financial assistance, nutritional support, experienced coaching, modern equipment, safe sporting environments, and a positive social ecosystem that encourages women to pursue sports as a career and passion.
During the discussion, it was noted that the availability of basic amenities plays a critical role in increasing the participation of women and girls in sports. Many talented athletes face challenges due to inadequate facilities, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. By ensuring the availability of clean and accessible toilets, secure changing rooms, proper lighting, and safety measures, sports grounds can become more welcoming spaces that encourage greater participation and help athletes focus on their performance without unnecessary barriers.
The meeting further stressed that strengthening sports infrastructure is an investment in the future of Maharashtra’s sporting ecosystem. Enhanced facilities will not only improve athlete welfare but also contribute to higher standards of training, better performance outcomes, and increased representation of women athletes at state, national, and international levels.
To achieve these objectives, officials were instructed to prepare a detailed action plan for the development and implementation of essential facilities at all sports grounds across the state. The action plan will include timelines, funding mechanisms, monitoring systems, and coordination among various departments to ensure effective and timely execution.
The initiative reflects the state’s broader vision of empowering women through sports and creating an environment where every aspiring athlete has access to safe, modern, and inclusive facilities. By prioritizing the needs of women athletes and investing in sustainable sports infrastructure, Maharashtra aims to set a benchmark for sports development and gender-inclusive policies across the country.
