Bollywood actress and filmmaker Kangana Ranaut has responded to online discussions about her latest film Emergency being India’s potential entry for the Oscars. The political drama, which recently premiered on Netflix, has been receiving positive reviews from streaming audiences.
Kangana’s Reaction to Oscar Buzz
Taking to Instagram Stories on Sunday, Kangana reshared a fan comment suggesting that Emergency should be India’s Oscar submission. In a sharp response, she wrote, “But America wouldn’t like to acknowledge its real face, how they bully, suppress, and arm-twist developing nations. It’s been exposed in Emergency. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards.”
The actress, who has won four National Awards for Fashion, Queen, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, made her solo directorial debut with Emergency. The film narrates key political events in India’s history, including the 1971 India-Pakistan War and the controversial Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Highlighting Indira Gandhi’s Conflict With the US
One of the film’s pivotal moments is Indira Gandhi’s meeting with former US President Richard Nixon at the White House. The scene depicts Nixon mocking Gandhi’s attire, which later prompts her strategic move to ensure Indian forces reached Bangladesh before US troops during the 1971 war, ultimately leading to Bangladesh’s liberation.
Kangana’s Take on Her Performance
Responding to another fan who praised her acting in Emergency, Kangana wrote, “People are calling my acting in Emergency amazing and my best ever. Could I surpass Queen, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Fashion, Thalaivi? Watch Emergency and find out.”
