The box office performance of Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Indian 2 has continued to decline on its eighth day of release. According to Sacnilk.com, the film, directed by S Shankar, earned ₹1.15 crore nett in India on Day 8, bringing its total domestic collection to approximately ₹71.55 crore.
Indian 2 had a strong opening week, with collections reaching ₹70.4 crore, split between Tamil (₹48.7 crore), Hindi (₹5.4 crore), and Telugu (₹16.3 crore). However, the film’s earnings have dipped over the past few days. On Friday, the film recorded an overall 12.82% Tamil occupancy.
The film marks the return of Kamal Haasan and director S Shankar after 28 years, continuing the legacy of their 1996 classic, Indian. Haasan reprises his role as Senapathy, also known as ‘Indian Thatha,’ a vigilante fighting against corruption using the ancient martial art of ‘varma kalai.’ The sequel also features Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, S J Suryah, Bobby Simha, Gulshan Grover, and the late Nedumudi Venu. Indian 2 is produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies.
Musically, the film continues the legacy of its predecessor with some of the original theme music by AR Rahman, while Anirudh Ravichander has composed the new soundtrack.
During promotional tours, Haasan humorously addressed questions about his character’s age, suggesting he would continue acting even at 120. Shankar defended the character’s longevity by citing a real-life 120-year-old Chinese martial artist, Lu Zijian, to emphasize the feasibility of Senapathy’s extended life in the film’s plot.
