Tumbbad Captures Hearts on Re-release; Fans Regret It Wasn’t Chosen for Oscars Over Gully Boy

Tumbbad Wins Hearts Once Again on Re-release; Fans Regret It Wasn't Sent to Oscars Instead of Gully Boy

As part of the latest trend of re-releases, Tumbbad (2018) returned to theaters on Friday the 13th, alongside classics like Veer-Zaara (2004) and Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003). Movie buffs were thrilled to see these iconic films back on the big screen, but Tumbbad, in particular, has reignited strong emotions among fans. The folk horror film, starring Sohum Shah and directed by Rahi Anil Barve, has once again tugged at the heartstrings of many who feel it was unjustly overlooked as India’s official entry for the Oscars.

Upon its re-release, Tumbbad has sparked conversations on social media, with viewers lamenting that it was not chosen for the Academy Awards. One social media user passionately tweeted, “#Tumbbad is a masterpiece that deserves all the accolades. The acting, direction, and story are all top-notch. It’s a shame that it wasn’t sent to the Oscars instead of #GullyBoy.” Another user echoed this sentiment, expressing frustration that the film was passed over: “Those who sent #GullyBoy to the OSCAR instead of this should be ashamed of themselves because it was the GOLDEN CHANCE for Indian Film industry to bring OSCAR HOME!”

For those who may not recall, Gully Boy (2019), starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, was selected as India’s official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. However, it did not make the shortlist. Even at the time, many fans were disappointed that Gully Boy was chosen over Tumbbad, and now, years later, the re-release of Tumbbad has reignited the debate. A fan tweeted, “Re-watched #Tumbbad after a few years as it released today again. I’m still baffled—why wasn’t it India’s official Oscar entry? This world-class masterpiece deserves global recognition!”

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Tumbbad mesmerized audiences with its stunning cinematography, unique storyline, and powerful performances. The film, which explores themes of greed and morality, left a lasting impression on viewers, many of whom believe it should have been given the chance to represent India on the global stage.

With Tumbbad continuing to earn praise even after its re-release, the question remains: Was it more deserving of being India’s official Oscar entry than Gully Boy? For fans of the film, the answer is a resounding yes.
