NCW Demands Swift Action After Apoorva Mukhija Receives Rape, Death Threats Post ‘Latent’ Controversy

NCW Demands Swift Action After Apoorva Mukhija Receives Rape, Death Threats Post 'Latent' Controversy

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday condemned the flood of rape and death threats sent to social media influencer Apoorva Mukhija, also known as ‘The Rebel Kid’, following her appearance on the controversial web show India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina. Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, the NCW called the abuse “despicable” and urged law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Mukhija, who had taken a brief hiatus from social media, returned this week and shared screenshots of the explicit threats she received on platforms like Instagram. Her post, marked with a trigger warning, highlighted mentions of rape, acid attacks, and death. “And that’s not even 1%,” she wrote in the caption, shedding light on the scale of online abuse she faced.

In its statement, the NCW emphasized that no woman should feel unsafe—whether in public spaces or online. “Issuing threats of sexual violence or death sets a dangerous precedent and must be dealt with sternly,” the Commission said.

The NCW has formally written to Maharashtra Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma, demanding an immediate and thorough investigation. The Commission has also sought a detailed action-taken report within three days and instructed that security and support be provided to Mukhija.

While reiterating its strong stance against offensive and crude digital content, the Commission made it clear that such abuse, especially in the form of sexual violence threats, cannot be justified under any circumstances.

“The responsibility to create a safe and respectful digital environment lies not just with law enforcement, but also with social media platforms and society at large,” the NCW stated.

This development comes weeks after the Commission summoned both Apoorva Mukhija and fellow influencer Ranveer Allahbadia in connection with India’s Got Latent. The two appeared before the NCW in March, expressed regret, and issued apologies over their controversial remarks made during the show.
