The much-anticipated horror comedy “Munjya,” directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, opened in theatres across India on Friday and has made a strong start at the box office. Rooted in Marathi folklore and set in Pune and the Konkan region, the film has captivated audiences with its unique blend of horror and comedy.

According to Sacnilk.com, “Munjya” earned an estimated ₹3.75 crore nett on its first day of release, with an overall Hindi occupancy of 21.49 percent. This impressive opening suggests a positive reception from the audience and sets the stage for a promising box office run.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, “Munjya” stars Mona Singh, Sharvari, Abhay Verma, and Sathyaraj. The film follows the story of the eponymous mythical creature, Munjya, and how he wreaks havoc in the life of Bittu, played by Abhay Verma, known for his role in “The Family Man.” Mona Singh portrays Pummy, a single working mother who is overly protective of her son Bittu.

“Munjya” opened with a strong performance, earning around ₹3.75 crore nett on its first day. The film’s combination of horror and comedy, set against the backdrop of Marathi folklore, has resonated with audiences, contributing to its successful opening day.

The Hindustan Times review highlighted the film’s unique blend of horror and comedy, though it noted that the horror elements were not particularly scary. The review praised the screenplay by Niren Bhatt and the solid story backed by Yogesh Chandekar, emphasizing the film’s fast-paced and engaging first half. Special mention was given to Saurabh Goswami’s cinematography, which effectively created a spooky atmosphere with aerial shots of the village, the peepal tree, and the stunning beach setting.

In a recent interview with ANI, Mona Singh shared insights into her character in the film. “I’m playing the character of Pammi in the film. Abhay is portraying Bittu, my son, and I’m his mother, who is pretty strict and possessive about him. Our journey together is filled with twists and turns. There’s plenty of drama and chaos. My character in the film is a lot of fun, a bit loud and feisty, and it’s hardcore comedy, something I’ve never attempted before,” she said.

With a strong opening day collection and positive audience reception, “Munjya” is off to a promising start at the box office. The film’s unique blend of horror and comedy, coupled with engaging performances by Mona Singh, Sharvari, and Abhay Verma, has set the stage for continued success in the coming days.
