Mohanlal’s Directorial Debut Barroz Gets Silent OTT Release on Disney+ Hotstar

Guardian of Treasures has made its way to OTT after a modest theatrical run. The fantasy Malayalam film, which was released on December 25 last year in 3D, did not receive the expected fanfare at the box office. Nevertheless, the film is now available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in multiple languages.

The digital release of Barroz took place on January 22, 2025, though the announcement was quietly made by Disney+ Hotstar, with no formal post from Mohanlal himself. The film is available for streaming in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, catering to a diverse audience. However, fans are already wondering when the Hindi-dubbed version will be available.

Produced by Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas, Barroz boasts a high-budget production, with a star-studded cast including Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon. Based on the novel by Jijo Punnoose, Barroz tells the story of the Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, with Mohanlal not only starring in the film but also stepping behind the camera as the director. The project was initially announced in 2019, but after several script and story changes post-pandemic, Jijo Punnoose exited the project, with Mohanlal taking over the reins.

Despite high expectations due to Mohanlal’s directorial debut and the film’s 3D appeal, Barroz did not fare well at the box office, collecting ₹9.83 crore in India and ₹15.1 crore worldwide, according to reports from Sacnilk. Fans, however, are still intrigued by the fantasy world that Mohanlal has created.

In a recent interview with ANI, Mohanlal shared his initial hesitancy about directing the film. He revealed, “I wasn’t very keen on it at first. This is a children-friendly movie, something families can watch together. When I first heard the story, I felt compelled to take it on.” He also explained that Jijo Punnoose, who originally conceived the story, wanted to direct a larger-scale film, leading to Mohanlal stepping into the director’s chair.

For those who missed Barroz in theaters, the film’s quiet yet significant digital release offers a chance to experience the magical world of treasure guardians, with a new, more accessible platform to reach viewers globally. Fans can now enjoy the film from the comfort of their homes on Disney+ Hotstar.
