Madhuri Dixit, the celebrated actress known for her roles in Bollywood films, and her husband, Dr. Shriram Madhav Nene, have created a stunning sea-facing home in Mumbai that marries contemporary design with the vibrant artwork of the late Indian modernist painter M.F. Husain. Situated on the 53rd floor of a high-rise building, this residence is a true sanctuary that reflects their shared aesthetic vision.
The couple enlisted architect Apoorva Shroff from Lyth Design to realize their dream abode, emphasizing a sophisticated, uncluttered environment. Madhuri describes the design as “beautiful yet artistic,” focusing on straight lines and a serene palette. Shroff elaborates on the project’s concept, stating it aimed to create a sanctuary with contemporary aesthetics while maintaining a minimalist undertone.
At the heart of their home is M.F. Husain’s artwork, which holds a special significance for Madhuri. The entrance foyer features a striking console by Vikram Goyal’s Viya Home, complemented by Husain’s paintings of the holy Ganesha and a vibrant carpet from Jaipur Rugs. Madhuri recalls, “Husain Ji wanted to paint the walls of my home, but I objected on the account of moving, so he painted me some of his finest works.” She expresses her admiration for the bold colors he employed, which add life and character to the space.
The dining area provides a contrast to the living room, showcasing a chic bar and an oval dining table with a stone top, paired with quilted teal leather chairs. The pièce de résistance is a captivating acrylic painting titled Dancing Women, also by Husain, which graces the white console with gold knobs.
The master bedroom offers a peaceful coastal view of the Arabian Sea. Its white marble flooring and wooden veneer wardrobes create a soothing atmosphere. Modern circular glass lighting fixtures hang from the ceiling, while soft furnishings in grey and white enhance the tranquility. Two standout paintings by Husain, Horse with Ganesh and Horse with Man and Woman, adorn the room, enriching its aesthetic.
One of the children’s bedrooms features a modern design, complete with a king-size bed and grey furnishings. A black glass lighting piece hangs from the ceiling, while a triptych of Husain’s vivid red paintings with splashes of orange and blue decorates the bedside wall.
Overall, Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Shriram Nene’s Mumbai home is a beautiful blend of contemporary design and artistic expression, showcasing the couple’s appreciation for both modern aesthetics and the timeless work of M.F. Husain. This residence not only serves as a family sanctuary but also as a testament to the harmonious relationship between art and design.
