Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film Indian 2 hit the screens on Friday, earning an impressive ₹26 crore net at the India box office on its first day across all languages, according to reports by Sacnilk. The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian, directed by Shankar, Indian 2 sees Kamal Haasan reprising his role as Senapathy.
The Tamil version of the film contributed the most to the day-one box office collection, earning over ₹17 crore. Meanwhile, the Hindi and Telugu versions brought in ₹1.1 crore and ₹7.9 crore, respectively.
Indian 2 faced stiff competition from Sudha Kongara’s Sarfira at the box office. Sarfira, a remake of Kongara’s National Award-winning Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, stars Akshay Kumar, Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas.
Produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, Indian 2 boasts an ensemble cast that includes Siddharth, S J Suryah, Bobby Simha, Gulshan Grover, and the late Nedumudi Venu. The film was released in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, catering to a wide audience base.
On the release day of Indian 2, veteran actor Kamal Haasan spoke to NDTV’s Sam Daniel about the film’s journey and his experience. “We have made up for everything we lacked in the first part and more. Whether it’s the budget, the technicians, the technicality, or the gadgets,” he said. Reflecting on his transformation for the role, Haasan described it as “gratifying” and added, “By now, I’m used to it. The only thing is the result if it’s gratifying, all the pain is worth it.”
