Abhishek Bachchan’s latest film, I Want To Talk, directed by Shoojit Sircar, has had a modest yet steady run at the box office, though its earnings took a slight dip on its third day. The film, which explores the emotional journey of a man facing a life-changing surgery while navigating complex family relationships, managed to cross the ₹1 crore mark in its opening weekend despite a slower than expected box office performance.
According to early estimates from Sacnilk.com, the film earned ₹50 lakh on its third day, bringing its total to ₹1.30 crore in India. This is a dip compared to the ₹55 lakh it earned on day two and ₹25 lakh on its opening day. The film’s overall Hindi occupancy on Sunday stood at 14.55%, indicating a moderate turnout despite the promising concept.
In comparison, Bachchan’s previous theatrical release Ghoomer (2023) saw much higher earnings on its third day, with ₹1.5 crore. I Want To Talk has struggled to match the commercial success of Ghoomer, but it has garnered attention for its heartwarming yet bittersweet narrative and Abhishek Bachchan’s performance.
I Want To Talk is a slice-of-life drama where Abhishek plays the role of Arjun, a man facing a life-threatening surgery while dealing with the complexities of his relationship with his daughter. The film also features Johny Lever, Ahilya Bamroo, Banita Sandhu, and Pearle Maaney in pivotal roles. Released globally on November 22, the movie has been praised for its emotional depth, though it has also been criticized for pacing issues, particularly in the second half.
In his review for Hindustan Times, the film’s pacing was noted as inconsistent, with the second half feeling unnecessarily stretched. However, the film’s hopeful ending was lauded, showcasing Abhishek’s natural charm and his ability to bring warmth to his character. Critics have also noted that Bachchan’s portrayal bears resemblance to his father Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in Piku (2015), particularly in how both characters navigate the complexities of family life.
Director Shoojit Sircar, who is known for his sensitive storytelling, expressed confidence in Abhishek’s performance, calling it “his best film.” In an interview with ANI, Shoojit recalled meeting Abhishek in Australia and felt that the actor’s eyes held the “innocence” of his mother, which brought depth to the role.
Despite the challenges at the box office, I Want To Talk continues to receive attention for its thoughtful storyline and Bachchan’s compelling performance. With the film gradually finding its audience, the coming days will reveal if it can build on its opening numbers and become a sleeper hit.
