In an unusual legal dispute, a Chennai-based engineering student, VV Vaageesan, has filed a legal notice against the producers of the Tamil film Amaran. The student claims that his phone number was inadvertently used in the movie, leading to a deluge of calls from fans of actress Sai Pallavi.
The Incident
Amaran, which released on October 31, features a romantic scene where Sai Pallavi’s character, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, throws a piece of paper with her phone number on it to Sivakarthikeyan’s Major Mukund. Unfortunately, the number shown in the film belongs to Vaageesan. The student alleges that since the release, he has received countless calls from fans seeking to connect with Sai Pallavi.
Vaageesan explained that the number is crucial as it is linked to sensitive documents like his Aadhaar and bank accounts, making it nearly impossible to change. He has been unable to sleep, study, or go about daily activities due to the constant interruptions.
Legal Demands
In his legal notice, Vaageesan has demanded ₹1.1 crore in compensation for the “untold hardships and mental agony” caused by the filmmakers. He also urged the producers to immediately remove the number from the movie. Efforts to resolve the issue by reaching out to director Rajkumar Periyasamy and lead actor Sivakarthikeyan on social media reportedly went unanswered.
Similar Past Incidents
This is not the first instance of a phone number used in films causing trouble for its real owner. In 2003, a similar issue arose after the release of Shivamani, starring Nagarjuna. The affected individual filed a legal case, citing “immense agony” from the influx of calls. In 2018, another person from Jharkhand sued over the use of their number in Akhil Akkineni’s Hello.
About Amaran
Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Amaran is based on India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. The movie tells the story of Major Mukund, a counterterrorism officer who received the Ashoka Chakra posthumously for his bravery.
The makers of Amaran are yet to comment on the legal notice. Meanwhile, Vaageesan hopes his plea brings relief from the incessant disturbances.
