Mohanlal’s much-anticipated directorial debut, Barroz, released on December 25, faced a disappointing reception at the box office despite the hype surrounding the film, particularly due to its 3D visuals. The Malayalam-language fantasy film, which also stars Mohanlal in the titular role, managed to collect an estimated ₹3.65 crore net in India on its opening day, according to Sacnilk.
Compared to his previous film, Malaikottai Vaaliban, which grossed ₹5.65 crore on its opening day in January this year, Barroz fell short of expectations. Despite the buzz and Mohanlal’s extensive promotions, the film’s opening day figures were dismal. Malaikottai Vaaliban, although eventually facing a dip in collections due to lukewarm reviews, went on to gross ₹13.97 crore in its 18-day run, with a worldwide total of ₹29.75 crore. It remains to be seen how Barroz will fare in the coming days, given its weaker opening.
The film is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure and features an ensemble cast including Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon. Although Mohanlal’s performance has been praised, the film has faced criticism for lacking the depth expected of a big-budget fantasy venture.
During the film’s promotion in Mumbai, Mohanlal, when asked about acting in Bollywood, shared his openness to doing Hindi films. The actor, who has appeared in a couple of Hindi films, including Company and RGV Ki Aag, mentioned that he would be happy to work in Hindi films if the right opportunity arises, emphasizing that actors often don’t have the luxury of choice in their career decisions.
As Barroz continues its theatrical run, it remains to be seen whether it can pick up momentum or struggle to recover from its lukewarm start at the box office.
