Actor-turned-yogi Anu Aggarwal, who became an overnight sensation with the 1990 blockbuster Aashiqui, recently revealed she never received her full payment for the film—even more than three decades later.
In a candid interview with Pinkvilla, Anu disclosed that she was only paid 60% of what was promised for her debut Bollywood film. “Mujhe aaj tak Aashiqui ke poore paise nahi miley (Till today I have not received my full remuneration)! They still owe me the 40%,” she said, shedding light on the financial shortcomings she faced despite the film’s massive success.
When asked if she had followed up with the makers, Anu shrugged it off with grace and a hint of humour. “No, it’s okay. Theek hain yaar (It’s ok). I earned a lot in so many… I earned much more in modelling. I became a brand ambassador. I am one of India’s first actress brand ambassadors. Uss time actor nahi hote the, sirf cricket ke hi hote the (Back then only cricketers were brand ambassadors). So theek hai yaar! Ye meri gift hain unko (So it’s my gift to them),” she said.
A Path Beyond the Spotlight
Following her brief but memorable acting stint in Bollywood, Anu’s life took a dramatic turn after a near-fatal car accident in 1999. The incident propelled her onto a spiritual journey, far removed from the glamour of cinema.
She chose not to return to mainstream Bollywood, dedicating her life to yoga, wellness, and motivational work. Despite her detachment from the film industry, her portrayal in Aashiqui remains iconic.
Legacy of Aashiqui
Aashiqui, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar, was a massive box office hit and a musical sensation. Its soundtrack remains a fan favourite to this day. The film also starred Rahul Roy and marked the beginning of a new era for romantic dramas in Bollywood. A sequel, Aashiqui 2, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, was released in 2013 and replicated the original’s musical success.
Though Anu Aggarwal may have never received her full dues for Aashiqui, her legacy—and grace—remain firmly intact.
