Singer Abhijeet Sawant, famous for winning the inaugural season of Indian Idol, recently revealed that he used the dating app Tinder for some time after getting married. Speaking candidly on the Hindi Rush channel, Abhijeet disclosed that he created a Tinder profile a few years into his marriage but stopped using the app after news about his account surfaced online.
Abhijeet, who tied the knot with wife Shilpa Sawant in 2007, admitted that Shilpa was unaware of his Tinder activity. “Main kabhi kabhi beech mein jaata tha, dekhta tha kya hai yeh sab kya hota hai? Maine apna hi naam rakha tha sab kuch sahi tha. Biwi ko nahi pata tha. But kuch kiya nahi, kisise mila bhi nahi, kuch tha bhi nahi,” he explained. (Translation: Sometimes I used to check the app to see what it was all about. I had my real name and details on it. My wife didn’t know, but I didn’t do anything, I didn’t meet anyone or have anything happen.)
He also shared that while on Tinder, he engaged in conversations with two or three women. “Match aata tha, baat karte the. Yeh cheeze na bohut ajeeb hai. Mujhe baat karne ka shokh hai aur aap ladkiyon se bohut deep baat karsakte ho…Main baat karta tha bohut. 2-3 log mil gaye the jo baat karte the acche se,” Abhijeet revealed. (Translation: I used to get matches and talk. It’s a strange thing. I enjoy talking, and you can have deep conversations with women…I talked a lot. I got 2-3 people with whom conversations were good.)
However, once the news about his Tinder profile went viral on Twitter, Abhijeet decided to quit the platform. “Usko nahi pata abhi tak, ab pata chal raha. Woh bichari usko pata bhi nahi kya hota hai Tinder. Ab pata chalgaya, open yaar, usme kya hai? Cheezein karni hai toh thok k karo phir,” he said, addressing the situation with a sense of openness. (Translation: She didn’t know about it till now, but now she will. She doesn’t even know what Tinder is. Now she knows. It’s open, so if you want to do something, just do it unabashedly.)
Abhijeet and Shilpa, who have two children—Sonali and Amit—have known each other since childhood and participated together in the dance reality show Nach Baliye Season 4 in 2008-09.
Apart from his singing career, Abhijeet has also acted in films like Lottery (2009) and made appearances on shows like Tees Maar Khan, Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai, and CID. He was the runner-up on Bigg Boss Marathi Season 5 and recently competed in Celebrity MasterChef India.
Despite the controversy, Abhijeet’s candid remarks underline his belief in transparency and living life without shame.
