Hyderabad / Chennai:
Renowned industrialist and philanthropist Rohit Sethi, known for his contribution to manufacturing, employment generation, and social welfare, has alleged that he is facing a deliberate and repeated misuse of matrimonial and dowry laws by his wife, Chandni Babbar, through multiple legal proceedings filed across jurisdictions.
Mr. Sethi, who directly and indirectly supports the livelihoods of hundreds of employees and their families, is widely recognised for his charitable initiatives, including assistance to underprivileged individuals, support for animal welfare, and sustained community service. He has stated that despite maintaining a clean public image and a long-standing record of responsible conduct, he has been subjected to what he describes as false, malicious, and financially motivated litigation.
According to Mr. Sethi, Ms. Babbar has instituted several cases against him in Hyderabad and Chennai, all of which are currently sub judice. He has categorically denied all allegations and stated that the cases are being contested on merits. He maintains that the allegations have no factual basis and are intended to coerce and harass rather than seek justice.
Mr. Sethi has further stated that during the marriage he spent and transferred approximately ₹2 crore towards marital, household, and related expenses, a fact he claims is supported by documentary evidence. Despite this, he alleges that he has been repeatedly targeted with litigation aimed at extracting further financial gain.
Crucially, Mr. Sethi has relied upon previous court records, orders, and supporting documents to assert that this conduct is not isolated. According to him, judicial records from Ms. Babbar’s earlier marriage allegedly show a similar pattern of complaints, including allegations under matrimonial and dowry-related provisions, which, he states, culminated in a financial settlement of approximately ₹2.2 crore. Mr. Sethi contends that these records establish a recurring pattern of false allegations and legal pressure as a means of financial leverage.
In addition to the legal proceedings, Mr. Sethi has alleged that during the subsistence of the marriage, movable assets valued at approximately ₹2 crore were removed from the matrimonial residence at GMR Trendset Apartments without his consent. He states that witness statements and documentary proof exist and will be placed before the appropriate authorities.
Mr. Sethi has expressed serious concern for his personal safety, the safety of his family members, and the protection of his reputation, stating that unchecked misuse of criminal and matrimonial laws not only destroys individuals but also discourages honest professionals and industrialists who contribute meaningfully to society.
Legal advisors associated with the matter have indicated that the disclosures are based on existing court orders, pleadings, and documentary material, and are being made in good faith to place Mr. Sethi’s version on record, particularly in light of what is described as a pattern of false dowry and matrimonial litigation.
Mr. Sethi has stated that he will continue to fight the cases lawfully and transparently and will pursue all available legal remedies to hold accountable those who, he alleges, have abused the legal system for personal and financial gain. He has reiterated his faith in the judiciary and expressed hope that the truth will ultimately prevail.
