“Anupam Kher Recalls Police’s Laughter After His Car Was Stolen Outside a Temple: ‘They Were Rolling on the Floor'”

Anupam Kher Recalls Humorous Incident of Car Theft Outside Temple

Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently shared a light-hearted yet poignant story about an unusual car theft incident that occurred while he was outside the Mahalakshmi temple. In a candid podcast conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Kher reflected on the tough times he faced in the early 2000s, revealing that he had almost gone bankrupt while attempting to establish himself as a TV mogul.

Kher recounted his visit to the temple, where he had previously sought solace and success during his struggling days. “In my attempt to become a TV tycoon, I almost went bankrupt in 2003-2004,” he explained. “I thought God was upset with me, and that’s why my bad days had come.” Despite being an established actor at the time, he faced significant financial challenges, with both his office and home on the brink of being sold.

On that fateful day, Kher decided to drive himself to the temple, even though he doesn’t particularly enjoy driving. He left his car running while he stepped out to pray. As he bent down, he was shocked to see a thief making off with his vehicle. In a panic, he flagged down an auto-rickshaw and instructed the driver to follow the thief, but they were unable to catch up. Instead, Kher directed the driver to take him to the nearest police station.

When Kher reported the theft, he was met with unexpected laughter from the officers. “They couldn’t stop laughing, rolling on the floor, saying they couldn’t believe something like this could happen in real life,” he recalled. To them, it felt like a scene straight out of a movie.

This humorous anecdote comes as Kher prepares for his next role in Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming political drama, Emergency, where he portrays Indian politician and independence activist Jayaprakash Narayan. The film also stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and features actors Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in key roles. The release date for Emergency has yet to be announced.

Through this story, Kher highlights not only the challenges he faced during a difficult period in his life but also the ability to find humor in unexpected situations—a testament to his resilience and positive outlook.
